Dr. Juan Alberto Mercado is an Assistant Professor I at the College of Public Affairs and Development (CPAf) University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). He is currently taking up a Ph.D. degree in Development Studies at the same institution. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of the Philippines Los Banos and an MBA from the University of the Philippines Diliman. Prior to his current academic pursuits, he was a corporate finance professional with over 20 years of experience having occupied senior executive positions in investment banking and in developmental work in government particularly in the fields of infrastructure development. His research interests include monetary systems, heterodox economic theory, and Critical Realist social ontology.
