aProf. Maria Kristina G. Alinsunurin was one of the keynote panel speakers during the Engineers without Borders (EWB) West Coast Conference 2021 held last April 23-24, 2021 via Zoom. The event was hosted by the EWB Chapter of California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo Chapter. With the theme “Critical Global Engagement,” the conference focused on critical conversations about global development. It covered several topics ranging from resiliency and sustainability, updates from various chapters, and critical discussions on development approaches and models.

The keynote panel was organized by Dr. Aaron Opdyke from the School of Civil Engineering of the University of Sydney. Together with aProf. Alinsunurin were Dr. Praditya Pertwi from the Faculty of Psychology of the Universitas Gadjah Mada and Dr. Jeffrey Walters from the College of Engineering of George Fox University.

The keynote panel focused on the topic “Inclusive Development: Ensuring Equitable Benefit and Voice.” aProf. Alinsunurin pitched in the issue on financial inclusion and its gendered impacts, focusing on understanding household decision-making through financial diaries. She emphasized that exclusion is not created equal, and inclusive financial systems should also account for intersectional factors. On the other hand, Dr. Pertiwi discussed ways to better address the needs of the people with disabilities in development in Indonesia, and Dr. Walters discussed systems thinking and balance of power dynamics based on his work in Africa. Dr. Opdyke, who provided the synthesis, challenged the professionals working in development on the methods used on the field matter and suggested they reflect on the institutions that shape the actions on the ground.

The Engineers without Borders (EWB) Conference is a yearly gathering of volunteers in the engineering profession that aims to discuss topics from a multi-disciplinary lens to address developing challenges. The EWB network spans worldwide, including the Philippines. (Maria Kristina G. Alinsunurin)
