Dr. Dizon tackles social research in her online lecture

Dr. Josefina T. Dizon, CPAf professor, discussed the challenges and alternatives in conducting social research at this time of the pandemic in a webinar series hosted by Pagkalinga on March 19, 2021.

Dr. Dizon noted how the pandemic has shifted data gathering from face-to-face to online. To gather data remotely, she discussed three alternative strategies as cited in an online publication by Wilhelmina Welsch.

“When gathering data remotely, there is a need to adapt the methodology by using a lean design, making use of remote technologies, and focusing on community engagement.”

Adopting a “lean design” means choosing the right unit of analysis and developing a phone interview questionnaire that can be answered for 15-20 minutes, according to Dr. Dizon.

Dr. Dizon further discussed the types and flow of online interviews. She also talked about the advantages and disadvantages of online surveys.

The webinar was conducted in partnership with the Philippine Association of Research Managers, Inc. Pagkalinga is a movement whose aim is to reach out and give hope to communities in need. It was initiated by a group of graduate students, many of which from CPAf.
